Apologetics- What’s the Point?
October 14, 2007
I’ve been doing some reading lately on Christian apologetics. In the course of my latest readings, I have come to an interesting revelation: so far, I have not found one convincing argument for my belief in the Bible or the Christian God. I suppose the reason that this discovery stood out to me so much is that I am reading the same materials that were a buttress to my faith only 3+ years ago. William Lane Craig, Josh McDowell, Ron Rhodes, Lee Strobel, and many other websites as well have all had fair consultation by me.
Here’s the deal: I remember a former pastor of mine making the comment in a sermon that “you can’t prove or disprove the bible.” I still think that is a great statement fully ringing of truth. Why is it that the same arguments that formerly strengthened my faith only now seem to discourage it all the more. Is it that I have become an apostate and therefore my eyes are now blinded to the truth? Possibly, however, Paul performed apologetics to the Greek Pagans in Romans and changed many of their minds. Is the reason that apologetics are not working for me because God has “hardened my heart” and I have no ability to return to the fold? Possibly. Although, I have to admit, if that were the case, I want nothing to do with that god anyway.
Here is what I think is really going on. Christians, you need to read and consider this, because I think this could be helpful to you.
1. Apologetics solely should not be used to lead people into a relationship with Christ. A Christian can have all of the reasoning in the world why his or her belief is correct…but guess what, the non-believer can have all of the reasoning in the world why his or her non-belief is correct. To engage in debate is fun, however, in the long run, completely ineffective. Even if there is a definite winner, the loser is not likely to change his or her position. Read some of the transcripts of debates between Atheists and Christians that can be found online. In some of them, you can see a definite winner, but never did I hear of an Atheist becoming a Christian or a Christian becoming an atheist as a result of the debate.
2. Apologetics is primarily useful in strengthening the faith of the faithful. Peter exhorts the readers to “have a reason for the hope that lies in you.” I believe this scripture has been twisted over the years. I don’t believe that having the reason is for the hearer as much as it is for the sayer. If you as a Christian have a reason for the hope that lies in you, then that strengthens your faith in the wake of questions and doubts. This reason helps convince you that there is reasoning behind your faith, not just blind acceptance. But once again, this reasoning is not likely to bring anybody to faith in Christ.
3. No matter how many answers you have for why the claims of Christianity are true, there will always be non-believers that can counter those answers with answers of their own. This is not necessarily a battle over who is more intelligent, instead, its a battle of perspectives. At this point, I don’t think there is anybody on this earth that can convince me to return to Christianity. No man (or woman) can do that, nor should they have to. The only one that could do that would be God. Apologetics are great to show the world that there is logic and reasoning behind your faith, but this logic and faith really does nothing when it comes to the “heart” relationship espoused by Christianity.
I do believe that apologetics has its place in the public discourse. I love listening to and participating in good debate. It must be understood though, your religion, whatever that may be, is your perspective. Do you look at life through Jesus colored glasses? Or Jewish colored glasses? Or do you look at life through the glasses of a skeptic? In order for true conversion or “soul-winning” to happen, there has to be a change on a much deeper level. A level so deep that apologetics couldn’t begin to get there.

great perspective on apologetics. i think that you are right, too many “christians” use it as a bashing tool. kind of like you pointed out on my recent post about Jesus not being condemnatory toward those on the outside. apologetics are intended to strengthen the believer, not preach to the non-believer.
instead, i love what francis of assisi said, “preach the Good News always, use words when necessary”. i think our life should be its own apology.

From my understanding regarding apologetics; could the whole exercise be to identify and eliminate your own doubts regarding the authenticity of religion? It seems that apologetics are ’supposed’ to be tackling arguments and attacks against their faith that are presently gaining ground, however would a more accurate portrayal of this be that the individual is seeking out and ‘exorcising’ their own demons and doubts; thus ritualising the whole apologetics process?

Vulcanis,
I think you’re right about apologetics being used to buttress one’s own beliefs. However, it seems many Christians, along with myself at the time, use(d) apologetics as a means of witnessing. I did want to get the arguments down for my own faith, but I also wanted to be able to show and “prove” to others that my way was right. I have since realized that this can’t happen, I’ve especially realized it now that I’m on the other side of the debate. I think apologetics serves its purpose well when used as a means to strengthen one’s own faith, it’s just ineffective when trying to change someone else’s mind.

I agree on the need of deeper level change. We see lot of thing as we believe them.

Correct. Reading scripture usualy does not bring a man to God. It usually takes a thought provoking experience. Have you ever heard of an atheist in a foxhole in the middle of a fire fight? For 23 years I have ask God to heal me of the Bi Polar illness, now, like he healed my baby brother. We both not young anymore.. But when I go to the rest home to see my brother I always ask him. Curtis! Let me see that ankle you shot with that 30.06 Deer Rifle. It destroyed that ankle. He smile his quiet little gentle smile, pull off both shoes and socks. He holds both feet up and with a twinkle in his eyes, he will quietly ask , which one Jim? Today, they are both perfect. No big hole in the side of the foot. How many times I have sat with that old shotgun in my lap, praying to God for help and seeing my brothers smile as he holds up both feet and says, which one Jim?. Beleive me. Seeing is beleiving. Those “Holy Roller” preachers you see on TV with the people with raised, “Holy Hands”, “praising Him” in a “great voice”, are real. They may be crazy compared to some. When I was told I was 100% disabled with Bi Polar illnes, I thought, Thank you Jesus. I would rather be crazy than stupid. God is a sure bet. He is the only gamble you can take that is not a sin. Foolish. Nor is it a gamble. Jesus says the walk with Him is not an easy one. It is a long and narrow walk. Not much fun, and, something better. Before I returned to my Father, I had ‘fun’ for many years. But something was missing. Now. I have found it. Something that sparkles like a diamond in the mud. Joy! There is nothing like the Joy one expereinces when he realises how much Jesus loves him. Sees a hell bound sinner give His heart to Jesus. [That is the only "Affimatiuve Action" He approves of. He says. He who works, eats, usually.] Don’t shut Him out yet. There is no going back if you should pass to the old by and by, and be wrong about this choice. Time. You have more time than money. And He is a cheap date. Most valuable experince one can have. “Don’t let your kids burn in hell son.!” Don’t let your kids burn Mom.” Yes! True! This may swound a little gross. The Truth is often hard to bear. [Seperates the brave from the coward.]But a lie can “kill ya”. Jesus says. “The Devil is a liar.” And his fun is a fraud. Joy is Truth in the eternal life we can share with the Master. Just like Momma and Dad was the Master. Now you are the Masters of your life. Will you make the right choice?
Jesus is Lord. We both love all the readers.
